The Names of God: El Elyon

El Elyon: The Most High God

Genesis 14:19 KJV
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

I have had a difficult time this week determining just exactly where the Lord wanted me to go with this post. There were several ways I could have gone.

I thought about addressing the abomination of the Bruce Jenner sex change. The Most High God does not make mistakes in creation. He knows us within our mother's womb, knows our very frame and the numbers of hair on our heads, He bottles the tears that we shed. He does not create us as females trapped in males bodies. The very idea of that someone suffers from this because they were born that way is ludicrous. It is a mental illness that should be treated as such.

I thought about the last 4 weeks in my family's life. My niece was hospitalized with high blood pressure at nearly 37 weeks pregnant and several stressful days later she welcomed a perfectly healthy, beautiful and tiny baby boy into the world. 2 of my great aunts, they are sisters, were diagnosed with cancer on the same day. Neither prognosis was good. We attended the funeral of 1 today while the other recovered from surgery at home. Last week I completed my first round of fertility treatments and now we begin the agonizing 2 week wait to take a pregnancy test. My Daddy and my Papaw are each having heart procedures done tomorrow. Routine procedures but heart surgery nonetheless. And El Elyon, the Most High God, the possessor of heaven and earth as Genesis 14:19 proclaims Him to be, is in control of it all.  Each and every situation. And yet it can be so hard to put our faith in Him when the most stressful moments of life are upon us. We so quickly forget what the Most High God is truly capable of.

But tonight, as I stood to hear the reading of God's Holy Word in our church service, the Holy Ghost whispered to me. My Pastor read from Hebrews 12:1-3, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds." El Elyon, the Most High God was brought to the lowest of low for you and I.

The weight of this world, the sin and the abomination that bombards us through every media outlet available, the worries of this flesh life and body, need be laid aside. When we find ourselves gossiping about the sins of one celebrity or another, instead of praying about the sin in our lives or praying for their souls, we are weighting ourselves down. When we find ourselves in a panic or on the verge of a nervous breakdown about a family member's health, our own desires, or even the stresses of working and paying the bills, keeping the house clean and the yard mowed, we are weighting ourselves down. We cannot run the race that has been set before us with the weight of the world on our shoulders.

So what must we do?

We must look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, the Son of El Elyon, the Most High God, and we must remember what was done for us. When we are wearied and faint we must remember what was endured for our sake. El Elyon came in the flesh as Christ Jesus. The Highest of Highs became as the lowest of lows when He was born as a babe in a manger. Though perfect and sinless, He was born into a world of sin and wickedness, He endured the cross and the contradiction of our sins upon His innocence. And He did it with joy. He did it so that when we are weary and burdened we can remember, we can feel it deep within our souls, His love and what His sacrifice means for us. It means that no matter how heavy the weight of this world is we do not have to bear it alone. We can cast it aside and look to Him, El Elyon, the Most High God.

The Names of God: Adonai-Lord

Adonai-Lord: Master

Adonai-Lord indicates the sovereignty of God. The Master is the one who assumes control of a situation. The servant, seeks to know and to do the will of his Master.

Genesis 15:2 KJV
And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

Abram was in a pickle. He was old, rich, and had no heir. He knew if he were to die, all that he had worked for, all that God had blessed him with, would go to some servant in his household, not his own flesh and blood. Never mind that he was being less than grateful or faithful. God had already made a powerful and bountiful covenant with him in Genesis 12:1-3 and renewed that covenant again in Genesis 13:14-18. God had assured Abram twice now that his seed would number as the dust of the earth. But Abram, like the rest of us doubted after time had passed and he was still childless. Abram was flesh, just like you, just like me. His faith faltered a little. He stumbled a bit in his walk.

Yet the knowledge that God was still God was clear when Abram called upon Him in Genesis 15:2. The Hebrew for Lord GOD in this verse is Adonai-Lord, Master. There may have been a little doubt creeping in and beginning to clutch at his heart but the truth remained, the truth that God is Master, He is in complete control. And because He is our Master, we are to serve Him, trust Him, and have faith in Him.

And like the loving and merciful Master He is, when Abram reminded Him that he was still childless, God, Adonai, promised him his heart's desire. But not only did He promise Abram an heir from his own loins, He promised for the third time that Abram's seed would number as the stars in the heavens.

Three times now, God had spoken to Abram and told him he would be the father of many nations, and somehow this was still not sufficient for him. Once again he got impatient, restless, and he took matters into his own hands, and Ishmael was conceived.

Astoundingly though, God once again renewed His covenant with Abram after Ishmael's birth. This was a sure sign of His love and patience with us. Were it any other father and son, I imagine there would've been much yelling and throwing hands in the air. But He remained long-suffering, even through His promise to Sarah of a son as she laughed at the absurdity of a child at her age.

Finally in Genesis 21, when Abraham was 100 and Sarah 90, Isaac was born and the rest is history as they say.

It took 25 years for Abraham to begin to see the fulfilling of the covenant God had made with him in Genesis 12, but that certainly did not mean that God was not in control every minute of those 25 years. And when you think about it, to only have to be reminded 3 times in a quarter of a century that God is in control, that He is Master and you are servant is pretty astonishing. It seems He has to remind me at least a dozen times in 24 hours.

But He is. He is Master. And He is in control of each and every situation, whether it be spiritual, financial, physical, or mental, He is Master. He created the heavens and the earth...He can cure cancer with a single thought. He breathed life into dust and made man...He can put life in even the most barren of wombs. Through His Son, He took 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes and fed 5,000...He can see any bill paid, any mouth fed.

He took one man's faltering faith and made him the father of many nations.

Here I am Adonai-Lord, use me up, make me your righteous and faithful servant.

Adonai

One single drop of rain
Your salty tear became blue ocean
One tiny grain of sand turning in your hand
A world in motion
You're out beyond the furthest Morning Star
Close enough to hold me in Your arms

Adonai, I lift up my heart and I cry
My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
Oh, my Adonai

One timid faithful knock
Resounds upon the Rock of Ages
One trembling heart and soul
Becomes a servant bold and courageous
You call across the mountains and the seas
I answer from the deepest part of me

Adonai, I lift up my heart and I cry
My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
Oh, my Adonai

From age to age you reign in Majesty
And today You're making miracles in me

Adonai, I lift up my heart and I cry
My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
Oh, my Adonai

Our Testimony

* Orignial Testimony written April 1, 2014

Brandon was saved at 9 years old when an aunt and cousins took him to Vacation Bible School at Faith Baptist Church, not far from where he lived.  From that time on Brandon was in church intermittently with the same aunt and cousins or with friends.  At 12, his parents and grandparents began an at home Bible study.  For 12 long years he was exposed to false doctrine and false teachings about the Bible and Our Lord.  But The Lord had a purpose. He had plucked Brandon out of the fire at an early age and Brandon's Salvation kept his heart protected.
I was saved at 5 years old in my Momma's Sunday School class at Roland's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.  I know that there are some that would scoff and be skeptical of a 5 year old's Salvation. But I can still remember the lesson. Momma was teaching about Elijah and the ravens and how The Lord had provided for and protected Elijah because of his faith and love for The Lord.  I knew then that I loved Jesus and I knew I didn't want to be bad any more and I asked Jesus to come and live in my heart. It was as simple as that.  I think the whole church heard my Momma shout that morning.
Our childhoods were very different. I was raised in church. I was there every time the doors were open.  Sunday School, VBS, Christmas plays and Easter pageants, revivals and jubilees.  Brandon's family met once a week and read the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse.  An amazing thing for a family to do.  If they're teaching biblical doctrine and worshipping and praising The Lord.  They were not.  When Brandon and I started dating in 2005, I attended Bible study with him on many occasions and each and every time I walked away with a lot of questions.  I was firm in my faith and knew false doctrine when I heard it.  I went to my Momma with my questions and I prayed for Brandon. For 7 long years we argued tiresomely about the differences in our beliefs. I wouldn't give in to what I knew was wrong and he wouldn't give in because he knew no other way.
In May 2007 we were married in a very country ceremony in my family's barn.  Even the mule made an appearance.  I wanted babies and in December of 2007 we decided to start a family.  We were living in a house owned by his grandparents and paying rent and doing our best to make ends meet.  We had an old Fisher Momma Bear woodstove that did her best to heat the drafty 5 bedroom house.  But we woke one morning to a cold stove and an even colder house. It was 12* outside that morning in January 2008 and as Brandon was trying to start a fresh fire in the stove, the creosote that had caught fire in the chimney, caused the chimney to explode when it caught fresh oxygen. This caused the burning logs to roll out on to Brandon, setting him on fire from the tips of his toes to his eyebrows.  As he was screaming and tearing the burning clothes from his body, the rug, curtains, and pine wood paneling in the living room went up in flames.  Brandon beat out the flames on his body, as I tried to throw water on an already out of control fire.  We ran for the back door and I grabbed my purse off the kitchen table.  We made it out of the house and ran past the kitchen windows to my car just as the windows in the house exploded.  We had no cell phone service where we lived and our phones were still in the blazing house. We drove to a neighbor’s house to call 911. Brandon had only his underwear on and 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his legs where the logs hit him.  I can still smell the acrid smoke that clung to him for days.  We lost everything we owned in that fire.  Sometimes I still go to look for something and realize it was lost in the fire.  But The Lord protected us.  Had we not woken up early that morning because of the cold, the creosote fire in the chimney could've killed us before we knew what was happening. The Lord saved us from that house fire, just as He has saved us from an eternal and undying hellfire.
In February 2008, a month to the day from the fire, I took an at home pregnancy test and it was positive.  I was ecstatic.  I had dreamed of being a Momma from the time I was a little girl.  It was 5 am and I woke Brandon up with the news by jumping on the bed.  I felt like I was floating on a cloud all day.  I couldn't wait to rush out to the store and buy "I love Grandma" and "I love Grandpa" bibs to give to my parents.  We were so excited to tell the news.  Neither of us could keep it a secret.  We went that weekend and bought half a dozen pregnancy and parenting books.  We started searching for the perfect baby name.  5 days later I miscarried.   We were crushed.  I felt like my heart had been ripped from my body.  It wasn't fair.  We had been married less than a year and already we had lost our home and everything we owned and now our baby.  We sat in the doctor's office with tears running down our faces as the doctor told us that it was common and that if I hadn't tested so early we probably would never have known I was pregnant.  She went on to tell me I was due for my annual exam and asked if I wanted to go ahead with it while I was there.  Her coldness and detached manner is something that still sticks with me today.  I realize that to her it was an everyday occurrence, but to us, our world had just fallen apart, again.  A baby is a baby, no matter how small, no matter how long you've known.  A baby is a piece of your heart and soul and a blessing from The Lord.
It took us 18 months to conceive again and in that time we bought a house and started to rebuild our lives.  In June of 2009 I tore my ACL and needed surgery to repair it.  I was out of work for 12 weeks and in August, just before I returned to work, I took another home pregnancy test.  I had taken so many in that very long 18 months that when it turned positive I nearly fell out in the floor.  I couldn’t believe it.  I just sat there and cried and thanked The Lord.  Brandon was at work and I was at my parent’s.  I had locked myself in the bathroom to take the test and I had been in there so long (because I had immediately called my new doctor’s office to make an appointment) that my Momma had come to check on me.  I got off the phone and opened the door.  She took one look at me and knew I was pregnant.  We stood there and hollered like loons and praised The Lord for being so good.  I was on cloud 9 and nothing could bring me down.  I returned to work at the end of August and it wasn’t long until the morning sickness began.  And I welcomed it.  Everyone told me it was a good sign.  It meant that the baby was growing and thriving.  Our first doctor’s appointment went off without a hitch.  Baby looked great on the first ultrasound at 10 weeks and the heartbeat sounded magical at 14 weeks.  We returned for our anatomy scan at 20 weeks with an entourage in tow.  My belly had grown and I had felt those tell-tale quivers and flutters of baby’s first movements.  I was past the morning sickness and my life could not have been any better it seemed.  Our family crowded into the room, cameras in hand, and the tech dimmed the lights and gelled my rounded belly.  We anxiously awaited to be told what our bundle of joy would be.  She suddenly turned and asked us to put the cameras away and said the doctor would be with us shortly.  She asked our family to return to the waiting room and for us to follow her to the doctor’s private office.  I knew in my heart, in the pit of my stomach that something was terribly wrong.  And yet I was so unprepared for what the doctor uttered when she finally joined us.  “I am sorry, but your baby is dead.”  I would’ve collapsed if I hadn’t been sitting.  I would’ve screamed if I could’ve found my voice.  Instead I sobbed and clutched Brandon as tightly as I could.  As if that would make it go away.  She left us to prepare papers for my admittance to the hospital.  I still had to labor and deliver my baby.  I still had to walk to the waiting room and tell my family that my baby was dead.  I still had to breathe even though it was the last thing I wanted to do.  The next 24 hours were undeniably the hardest in our lives.  I was admitted to the hospital and they medically induced my labor.  12 hours later I delivered a beautifully tiny, wonderfully perfect baby boy.  He was no bigger than the palm of my hand and yet he was so perfectly formed.  He had 10 toes, 10 fingers, tiny ears and lips and a button nose.  Another 12 hours later and we took our son, Lachlan James, home to be laid to rest.

The next 6 months were very bleak.  We were in a deep and dark hole full of anger and hopelessness.  We turned everywhere but to The Lord for comfort.  My darkness found me on the side of the tub, a fifth of liquor in one hand, and a razor blade in the other.  I could not see past my pain.  I could not see God’s purpose in taking my son from me.  And I didn’t want to.  The last thing I wanted to do was pray.  I didn’t want to talk to God, I didn’t want to think about God.  In my heart I knew He loved me and yet somehow instead of helping my pain, that only made it worse.  I couldn’t understand why, if He loved me, He would take the one thing I wanted most away from me.  Brandon’s drinking had gotten much worse, teetering on the verge of alcoholism.  We fought constantly, each one of us dealing with countless demons.  We were in the depths of despair and couldn’t, wouldn’t reach out and grasp the lifeline that The Lord provided and climb out.
Today I can understand.  Today I can be thankful.  Today I know that had Lachlan lived he would have been born deaf, blind, and mentally handicapped because I had an infection in my 1st trimester that we had known nothing about.  Today I know that my Lachlan is running, playing, laughing and loving our Savior.  Today I am at peace.  Today I love my Lord more than I ever have.
In June of 2010, another positive home pregnancy test thrilled my soul and filled it with intense fear at the same time.  I had not fully rebuilt my relationship with The Lord and the worry and anxiety plagued me.  I went 19 weeks with no problems and then suddenly, while at work, my blood pressure shot sky high and landed me on bed rest.  For the next 20 weeks.  I was on blood pressure medicine and twice a week Non Stress Tests to keep my blood pressure under control and to keep a close eye on my baby, who through it all was deemed as healthy as could be.  This anatomy scan was filled with delight and when the tech said that magic word we burst into tears.  Boy. If Brandon’s grin had gotten any bigger it would’ve split his face in two.
In December 2010 I lost my job.  By law they only had to hold my position for 12 weeks and I had exceeded that.  I had been dreading it the whole time I had been on bed rest. It was a constant worry.  My income had already been slashed to 60% while I was on disability and we were barely making ends meet as it was.  How on earth were we going afford a baby with only one income?  I did my best not to worry about money for the sake of the baby.  I knew it was detrimental to my health, causing my blood pressure to raise and my swelling to worsen.  I could not see how we were going to make it.  I didn’t have faith that He would provide for us.
January 2011 brought the big day.  We were so excited for the induction that we sat up all night and got to the hospital nearly an hour early.  17 hours, 3 failed epidurals, and a C-section later and we had the most beautiful blessing from God in our arms.  We could not have been happier.  Kieran Alexander-Brodie Boyd was the most magnificent thing I’d ever laid eyes on.  I didn’t know that I could love something so tiny, so much.
Then, once again, that old familiar demon, worry, sat in.  I had managed to put the differences in our beliefs out of my mind temporarily.  But once Kieran was born I was not only accountable for myself but for him as well.  The arguments began almost immediately.  Will we teach him about Easter or the Passover?  Will he believe in the Rapture or be watching for the Anti-Christ to return first?  Will he be taught that drinking alcohol is a sin or permissible by the Bible?  Will he be allowed to eat pork meat or must he abstain?  The questions and the fighting were endless it seemed.  We went around in circles, never managing to come to an agreement.  I became very guarded and very protective of Kieran and what he was exposed to.  This put me at odds not only with Brandon but with my in-laws as well.  I was warring within my heart over what to do.  Terrified all the while that divorcing my husband would be my only option and yet still not the right answer.  I couldn’t stomach the thoughts of a custody battle or of him being exposed to the false doctrine and immoral ways of my in-laws without me as a safeguard.
In March 2011 my disability benefits ran out but I qualified for unemployment benefits.  The Lord had provided despite my overwhelming lack of faith.  The same month Brandon got a promotion at work which meant a raise.  A double blessing, of which I was so undeserving but so very thankful for.
In September of 2011, when Kieran was 8 months old, I took another home pregnancy test.  Positive.  My heart leapt with joy and sank with apprehension at the same time.  Again I was worried about the pregnancy and the baby.  Would this pregnancy be as hard as the last? Would I carry this baby to term?  Would this be a healthy baby?  And this time the trepidation about how we would raise our children was all too real.  But I was so eager and excited to have another tiny baby to love and snuggle that I pushed that uneasy feeling about raising them to the back of my mind.
In February 2012, I was 5 months pregnant with another boy (which tickled us to no end), and had enjoyed a wonderful pregnancy.  My doctor had taken extra precautions from the beginning but the difference in my pregnancies were night and day.  I was loving being a full time stay at home Momma and couldn’t wait for the new baby to arrive.  Kieran had just turned a year old and was walking and talking up a storm.  He was my delight, my joy, the very reason for my existence.  And the cause of much turmoil.  The breaking point came on a Sunday night.  We had loaded up for the evening to go to the in-laws, as was our usual habit, but the moment we arrived there was so much tension in the air you couldn’t stir it with a stick.  Kieran was sleeping and my rule was to never wake a sleeping baby, so I sat on the couch in the corner of the living room and did my best to keep him asleep as long as possible.  It was Super Bowl Sunday and a good a reason as any for Brandon and the in-laws to drink, not that they needed one.  It escalated quickly and as soon as the football game was over I was more than ready to pack up and go home.  Kieran was thankfully oblivious to the drunken adults around him.  He was wandering around into everything.  I had been working on teaching him the word No and about consequences.  Discipline was hard for me as a new Momma and I was doing the best that I knew how.  But the in-laws disagreed.  And one thing that Brandon and I had remained a united front on was that we were Kieran’s parents and that we would raise him as we saw fit (even if we couldn’t come to an agreement as to how).  We didn’t want any interference from his parents or from mine.  It was very important to me that I keep things as equally balanced as I could.  My parents didn’t babysit Kieran because I couldn’t allow my in-laws to, I couldn’t trust them.  My parents couldn’t have an inside dog because we’d asked my in-laws to remove theirs because we didn’t want Kieran crawling around in dog hair and on a urine stained carpet.  My parents could only see Kieran once a week because the in-laws only saw him once a week.  It was exhausting trying to maintain a balance between the grandparents but I knew if I didn’t it would cause yet another issue between Brandon and I.  My balance imploded that night in an explosive and unpredictable fight that quickly intensified to a physical altercation.  Never in a million years would I have dreamt that what happened could happen.  The night ended in ultimatums issued from both sides.  That was the last night Kieran saw Brandon’s parents.  That was the last night Brandon drank alcohol.  That was the last night we were out of church.  Brandon came home the very next night from work and announced that we needed to get our family in church and that come Sunday, we were going.  And we did. The Lord used such a terrible ordeal as a catalyst to set things in motion that no one could’ve seen coming.
Memorial Day weekend 2012 I went into labor.  I was in denial.  I was scheduled for a C-section for the end of the coming week and I still had a list a mile long of things that needed to be done.  The contractions started on Saturday and continued through Monday.  The only time they subsided was when I was in bed, lying completely still.  With a 17 month old toddler running around, lying down in bed was never an option.  They were still sporadic and not terribly painful so we held off on calling the doctor.  Tuesday rolled around and by 5 pm the contractions had gone from every 10 minutes to every 5 within the last hour and by 7 pm we were on our way to the hospital.  The contractions were coming every 3 minutes and I was gritting my teeth through the pain.  By 10:38 that night I was holding another of the most glorious blessings from God.  Devlin Jasper-David Boyd was breathtaking.  I had secretly worried that my heart wouldn’t hold enough love for two babies.  That somehow I wouldn’t be able to love Devlin as much as I loved Kieran.  A mother’s heart is a miraculous thing.  Somehow my heart grew in the very instant I heard his first cry.  My heart grew and burst with love.  God had given me 2 healthy sons and I was so thankful and so blessed.
In just the matter of a few short months The Lord had so transformed my life that it was barely recognizable.  I was closer to Him, more in love with Brandon and happier than I had ever been.  The Lord had truly worked a miracle in our lives.  Brandon was a new man, a changed man, a happy man.  Gone was the alcoholic, gone was the tobacco addiction, gone was the perverseness and filthy words he used to utter.  Gone too was his family.  From February to August of 2012 we had only seen and spoken to them 3 times.  They had held Devlin once.  They cut us out of their lives.  Unable to abide by the stipulations we had set, they chose false doctrine and alcohol over their grandchildren.  Brandon rarely talked about it.  I knew the hurt was there.  I knew his heart broke a little with each day that passed without them.  But little did I know the work that The Lord was doing in his heart.  As he mourned the loss of his parents as though they had died, The Lord was mending his heart, putting it back together with pieces of His own.  On August 12, 2012 Brandon stood up in church and announced his call to preach.  Never had a congregation been more stunned yet more accepting than that Sunday.  But they had seen the difference in Brandon.  When Brandon and I started dating, I never imagined we’d end up as a preaching family. The thought never crossed my mind.  My Momma had always told me that she knew I was destined for great things. That The Lord was going to use me in a mighty way.  I had always laughed. I’m certain she never expected this.
Our happiness didn’t seem to last very long.  I reckon the moment Brandon stood up and announced his call to preach, the devil jumped on our backs.  There was more hardship on the horizon.  Brandon began to have difficulty at work, with his supervisor in particular.  The man was ex-military and claimed to be a Christian.  When he learned that Brandon was a young preacher he began to ridicule him for his faith and for his preaching.  He continually brow beat Brandon and jumped on him for things at work that were out of Brandon’s control.  The straw soon broke the camel’s back and Brandon had had enough.  In March 2013, after a confrontation with his supervisor, Brandon sat down at a table in the break room and began to pray.  He prayed until he felt he had an answer from The Lord and then he stood, gathered his things and walked out the door.  He called me on his way home to tell me he had quit his job.  To say that I was dumbfounded is putting it mildly.  I called my Momma, still too shocked to cry, and asked her what in the world we were going to do.  Pray she said.  And pray is what we did.
It was the longest and the toughest 8 months of my life.  Brandon couldn’t find a steady job and not for lack of trying.  We filled out dozens and dozens of job applications.  He even went door to door handing out his resume.  He was placed several times with a temp agency but it was never for very long, never enough pay. I was at home with 2 babies, 1 still nursing and refusing to take a bottle, and couldn’t find a job with enough income to support us.  We quickly fell into financial ruin, nearly lost our home, and almost lost our faith.  Had it not been for The Lord and my family we’d have been in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere, homeless with 2 babies.  My Daddy helped us in ways I’ll never be able to repay.  He became our provider, our protector, our champion.  There was not a single time in that seemingly never-ending 8 months that we called on my Daddy that he turned us away. Never.  He did all that he could to keep us clothed, fed and warm.  And he never faulted Brandon for taking a stand for The Lord.  My Momma prayed.  My Momma encouraged.  My Momma defended Brandon at every turn.  My Momma is Brandon’s biggest supporter.  She saw through the struggle and she put her faith in The Lord when I couldn’t seem to.  My sisters and brothers are the reason my children have a home today.  They gave Brandon work when they could so he could earn money and paid our bills when we couldn’t.  There is not a soul on this earth who could ask for better sisters and brothers than what The Lord has blessed me with. My family has become Brandon’s family.  They have taken him in as one of their own.  They love him like he was blood.  I cannot thank The Lord enough for our family, for the abounding love they have shown us.
In October 2013 in the midst of the madness that had become our lives, Brandon got a call from a close preacher friend of ours about a job opening.  The job seemed like a long shot and never have there been more people praying for one man to get a job than there were praying for Brandon. On October 31st Brandon started his new job.  A first shift job.  A job making more money than he had been, with ample opportunity to move up within the company.  Our sigh of relief was like the shot heard round the world.  God’s grace was so abundant.  The past 8 months suddenly made sense.  We couldn’t know that Christ was all we needed until Christ was all we had.
In December 2013 I took a home pregnancy test.  Our 5th positive.  We were filled with anticipation and happiness.  We immediately began planning.  I had saved all our baby stuff from the boys and we only needed a couple of items.  I already had names picked out and Kieran and Devlin were excited.  The first couple of weeks went by quickly but then morning sickness hit and suddenly my energy was gone, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, and I was dizzy all the time.  Something wasn’t right.  I could feel it in my bones.  I prayed and I prayed for my baby and the pregnancy.  And when I wasn’t praying I was trying to push the worry aside.
At the end of January 2014 I went to the doctor for my first check up and ultrasound.  I was 10 weeks along.  I knew the moment the doctor turned toward me that my baby was gone.  The baby had not developed and there was no heartbeat.  That familiar pain rose up again and gripped my heart.  As much as I had feared it, I still had not really expected it.  But this time was different.  This time I didn’t cry out in anger and demand to know why The Lord had taken my baby.  This time I didn’t let my pain separate me from my Savior.  This time Brandon and I turned to The Lord with our grief.  We turned to Him for comfort and healing.  The pain was still there but the peace was too. I knew that God’s will is far greater and more perfect than my own.  And I know that one day soon my family will be whole again.  There will be 3 sets of tiny feet standing with my Savior at the gates of heaven.  3 sets of precious arms to wrap around my neck and 3 sets of perfect lips to kiss me and call me Momma.  My angel babies are perfect in heaven where there is no pain and no sorrow and no darkness.  And my Jesus loves them more than I can even comprehend.
The trials and the tribulations that Brandon and I have faced in the last 9 years have put a special burden in our hearts for other Christians experiencing hardships, for other mothers who have lost babies, and for the lost who have no Savior to call on for comfort and healing.  Today we are praying hard and working toward building our ministry.  God has placed a calling on our lives and we want to do nothing more than to please Him.  The Lord is blessing Brandon with open doors to preach and we are so very thankful for them.  We’ve started a website and a blog, all brand new territory for us, and the going is slow but exciting.  Our boys are growing and filing our lives with so much love and gladness.  Our family has continued to support us in everything that we do and encourage us at every opportunity.  We simply want to love the Lord, to help those around us and bring glory and honor to God in all that we do and in all that we are.

*Update April 19, 2015
The last year has held much joy, excitement, change, sadness, and sorrow. But it has held more of our Father’s love, mercy, and grace than we have ever deserved.
Brandon is still on 1st shift at his job and it continues to be an amazing blessing. I am still staying at home with our boys. Both Brandon and I are enrolled in full-time college courses, he at Liberty University and I at Walden University. Our dream and goal, if it be the Lord’s will, is to open a Christian counseling center in our community. Our desire to serve our Master and to help those around us has only grown in the last year. Kieran has been in our county’s mobile pre-school program since August and he loves it. He goes for 3.5 hours a week and he enjoys playing with the other children so much. While Kieran is at school, Devlin and I spend time with my Papaw. It is such a joy to see the relationship that he has developed with his great-grandfather. I am so thankful that the Lord has given me the opportunity to witness the bond that has grown between the two of them. It is beautiful.
In February of this year the Lord decided to bless us with a baby, something I had long been praying for. However in March, the Lord chose to take our baby back to heaven. It has been hard and painful to understand and to deal with. It was very unexpected and though it is a familiar pain, it is never easy. But we know that we will be reunited to heaven one sweet day. Our family will be complete in that heavenly city, in the glorious magnificence of our Savior.
We are healing each and every day. The Lord’s grace has been present throughout it all. And we are continuing to pray about the Lord’s will for our family.
Today though was a joyous day. We had Brandon’s licensing service at our home church and the significance of it was overwhelming. It will never cease to amaze me the power that God has and the power of a single person's prayer. We were humbled by today and our prayer is to always and unceasingly follow the will of God, to be of service to Him, to bring glory and honor to His name. We are thankful to every single person who has ever uttered a prayer for our sakes and our ministry, to those of you who are a source of encouragement, support, and love, to our family, we'd not be where we are today without them and the Lord. And eternally thankful to the Lord for His soul saving power, mercy, grace, guidance, love.

Forever

Job 1:21 KJV
And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

I've struggled these last 2 months. My heart is weary. My body is tired. The days have become a battle that I grow exhausted of fighting. Today was a day that could have broken me.

Today is a day that should have been one of the most magical in my life. Today is Lachlan's due date. Today we should have celebrated his 5th birthday. He should have had 4 brothers and sisters running around him, helping him to blow out birthday candles, fighting over whose present he unwrapped first, while his Daddy wrangled them all, tossing them into the air, catching them as they squealed in delight. I should've been glowing, rubbing my belly, round with baby number 6, taking pictures, making memories. There are so many should've beens, could've beens, would've beens that today held.

Sometimes I feel like the unfairness of it all will crush me, that I'll just collapse one day and not be able to stand back up. Sometimes I wonder if my heart will ever stop hurting, if my arms will ever feel full. Sometimes when I least expect it, the devil worms his evil way in and snatches my precious peace. I forget that, truly I'd never wish them to be here on this wretched earth with me, not when I know what they'd be leaving behind. I forget that He has a purpose and a plan for every life I've carried in my womb, whether it was 5 weeks, 20 weeks or 39 weeks.

But then sometimes, my Jesus shows up in the most unexpected way and my doubts and fears and regrets and the unfairness of it all is suddenly whisked away.

Today my Jesus showed up in the love of a friend, a friend who understands just exactly what it means to long for a baby for years, and then to have that desire granted, but only for a little while. My sweet and precious friend had this necklace made for me. The 6 stones represent the months my babies were due and the birthstones of my Lachlan, Kieran, and Devlin. And she reminded me that, whether they are earthbound or heavenly, my babies are mine, forever. Forever. My arms may not be as full as they could've been here in this life, but my arms and my heart will be full and overflowing forever in eternity with my Jesus and my babies.

Yes He gave. Yes He took away. But He has laid up for me treasures in heaven that will be mine forever. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

A Cruel Pain

A month ago yesterday I took a home pregnancy test on a whim. I was shocked and thrilled to see it was positive. I woke Brandon up to tell him and he was as stunned and excited as I was. And I tried to keep it a secret as long as I could...which ended up being less than 24 hours.  The boys saw the tests in the bathroom and were naturally curious and we were excited to tell them what the tests meant, that they were going to get a baby brother or sister. I took lots of pictures and video as we told them, their expressions and excitement was priceless. The picture above is what we used to announce the pregnancy to our family. We were on could nine. And then the bottom dropped out of the cloud.

The last two weeks have been full of pain and confusion. I'm in limbo waiting for the miscarriage my doctors say is imminent. My hcg levels dropped out of sight and the pregnancy tests now read negative. It's a cruel pain, the waiting. Because in the waiting lives the tiniest drop of hope. Hope that the doctors are wrong, hope that despite what science says that my baby is alive and thriving, hope that if I can just endure a little longer I can ask for an ultrasound that will prove there is life blossoming in my womb.

So here I sit...wondering, hoping, doubting, grieving.

My heart tells me that my God is all powerful, all knowing, and all consuming. He knows the truest desires of my heart, He hears me when I can't bear to utter a word, and He has the power to take this tiny bit of hope in the farthest corner of my heart and make it a reality. But then my mind takes over and I realize that I sound like a lunatic to most people. That my mind is probably compensating for my grief and twisting reality to enable me to cope without having a full on mental breakdown. I know I have scoured the internet enough for stories of healthy babies born in situations like mine to know that I probably am crazy.

But I've just realized that in these last weeks I've forgotten all that I learned about the 5 Crowns of the Christian Life and I've forgotten what it means to be a daughter of the King.

A daughter of the King is known not by the crown she wears, but the message she bears.
We are women of beauty, women of grace, women of excellence, beholding God’s face. We walk with the Lord, with integrity, knowing our purpose and destiny. No matter what happens we walk in God’s love, reflecting the beauty of our Father above.

So while I have driven myself to anxiety, worry, lunacy, and doubt, the devil has been creeping in, doing his ever-lovin' best to steal away the crowns I have been striving to achieve. Why would these crowns be of any importance to him? Because they not only represent a life lived for Christ, they are gifts to be given to my Savior.

Revelation 4:10-11
10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

I've been letting the devil steal all that I've worked for. And if I don't stop and take them back I'll be empty-handed at the feet of my Father. I'll have nothing to cast before His feet while I worship and praise Him.

So while the waiting is cruel and the unknown is frightening, I have to remember that no matter what the outcome is, my Jesus loves me. My Jesus loves me enough to have worn a crown of thorns so that I could one day be given the crowns of a Christian life.

The Beatitudes: Blessed Are Those Which Do Hunger and Thirst

Matthew 5:6 KJV
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

This morning I woke up as normal. Bright and early to two beautiful blond, blue-eyed boys. We went about our morning routine: potty, breakfast, Annabelle's breakfast (the 6 month old eats-me-out-of-house-and-home German Rottweiler puppy that my boys adore even if she does dwarf them in size and weight), cartoon time and my time to catch up on all that happened in the 6 hours of sleep I was able to get. Nothing unusual this morning. I scrolled through Facebook, mentally noting the prayer requests I came across, silently asking God to do His will in the situations. Then my phone vibrated with a text message. Another prayer request for a local family who lost their 17 year old son in a fatal car accident this morning. I knew the family, though not well, but knew many people who were very close to the family and their son. My heart began to break for his family and loved ones. A tragedy such as this is unimaginable. I prayed for the Lord to comfort his family as only He can.

I thought about them throughout the day and tonight as I prayed with my boys and tucked them into bed, I thought about the boy.

I thought about him and his Momma and how I would feel if I were in her place. And the thought came to me as I kissed my boys goodnight, that we never know what the morning holds, much less the next minute. And if I were in this Momma's place, the one thing I would want to know for certain is that my boys had accepted Christ as their Savior. I would want to know that I had done everything in my power to show them Christ's love, to walk in His righteous path, to live in the Spirit and to direct them to Him. I would want to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they loved the Lord Jesus with all their heart and believed that He was crucified on Calvary for their sins. I would want to know that I had so hungered and thirsted after His righteousness that my boys hungered and thirsted too. I would want to know that when He filled me up it overflowed and filled my babies up too. If I had to trade places with that Momma and think for a single second that I had not done every single thing humanly possible to lead my sons to the Lord, if I thought that there was even the slightest chance they did not have the full pardon of salvation, I would not be able to live another day.

Our number one priority as a parent should be to raise our children to know the love of their Savior. If we never did another thing right but to see our children accept Christ as their Redeemer, then we'd have done the most important thing right.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.

Lord,
I pray tonight that you be with this family who has lost their son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, high school sweetheart, and friend. Lord I pray that they seek Your Face for comfort and for guidance. I pray Lord that they have the security in knowing their son was one of Yours, a Child of the King. I pray Lord that his death not be in vain, I pray that in seeking solace in this tragedy that some lost sinner may find You and Your Redeeming Grace.

Lord I pray tonight and every night that you would take my hand and lead me, guide me, show me Your way. Show me how to be a godly Momma, wife, daughter, and servant. Show me how to raise my boys in Your glory and admonition. Lord I pray that when the time is right, when You prick their hearts and beckon them to come to You, that they not hesitate a single second. I pray Lord to always hunger and thirst after righteousness and to be filled by your presence in Heaven some sweet day with my boys by my side.

In Jesus Sweet Name I Do Pray,
Love You Jesus,
Aman

Child of the King

Once I was clothed in the rags of my sin,
Wretched and poor, lost and lonely within.
But with wondrous compassion, the King of all kings,
In pity and love, took me under His wings.

Oh, yes, oh yes, I'm a child of the King
His royal blood now flows in my veins.
And I who was wretched and poor now can sing
Praise God, praise God, I'm a child of the King.

Now I'm a child with a Heavenly home,
My Holy Father has made me His own.
And I'm cleansed by His blood, and I'm clothed in His love,
And some day I'll sing with the angels above.

Oh, yes, oh yes, I'm a child of the King
His royal blood now flows in my veins.
And I who was wretched and poor now can sing
Praise God, praise God, I'm a child of the King.

Fruits of the Spirit: Faithfulness

Galatians 5:16-25 KJV
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Faithfulness Is:
A promise (Romans 3:3, Lamentations 3:23) to keep one's word, and do one's best (1 Thessalonians 1:3) with a servant-attitude focused on the Master's approval (Matthew 25:21).

To avoid spoiling watch for weariness, laziness, procrastination, and discouragement.

Ask me how I am at any given point in the day and I'll probably give you one of the above answers. I'm either tired and weary, being lazy, procrastinating and avoiding something, or I'm just downright discouraged.  Exactly the perfect conditions to spoil the fruit of faithfulness. We know that the Fruits of the Spirit build one upon the other so we know what the perfect conditions to ripen our faithfulness to harvest are. They are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness and goodness. I need to fill my days with these fruits so that I can be faithful to my Savior, so that I can walk in His Spirit as I have been commanded to do.

Perhaps the most important part of faithfulness is the servant-attitude focused on the Master's approval and no one else's. In writing this blog I often struggle with discouragement. Sometimes I feel like there is little to no point in writing these posts because perhaps I don't get the volume of feedback I'd like from the audience I had hoped to reach.  I let myself get bogged down in looking for approval from my peers instead of my Master. Do I need encouragement from my brothers and sisters in Christ? Yes! Absolutely! But ultimately it is His approval that I should crave. It was Him after all that gave His life so that I could live a life covered by the blood. Yet, although I pray for guidance before writing any of my posts, I still find myself second guessing what I've written until I get an "atta girl" from family or friends.  I've told my Momma this before. She scolded me. And I needed it. She told me that second guessing what the Holy Ghost had given me would do nothing but irk Him and I certainly didn't want that. She's right. If I ask Him to use me, to guide me, to give me the words He'd have me use, and then I doubt what He gave me, I'm failing in my faithfulness, in my promise to do my best.

I believe that God gives each of us a specific and unique gift, with one outcome in mind: to be profitable in the Gospel, to use our talent to point others to Christ.  In Matthew 25:14-30 we find Jesus telling the parable of the talents.  The Master gave to each servant according to his abilities. The man with 5 talents and the man with 2 talents each received the same amount of praise because they were profitable, they had each doubled their talents. The third man hid his 1 talent in fear and was cast into outer darkness where there was weeping and gnashing of teeth because he was unprofitable.

This parable isn't speaking of money but of our individual ability, our specific and unique gift, to serve God. Because although Salvation is not of works, our Salvation will give us the desire to do good works for our Savior.

We must be rich in the fruit of our faithfulness to be profitable for Christ even when we do not always understand the happenings of our lives.

Faith is a deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways you may not understand at the time. --Oswald Chambers

When I miscarried in my 5th pregnancy in January this year, I had no idea what God's reasoning was.  I felt that we were finally getting our lives back on track and that a baby was going to multiply our joy exponentially. But God said, "Not now."  I couldn't understand His will at the time but I made the deliberate choice to have confidence, to have faith in Him. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that we'd have founded Help the Hurt Ministry and odds are, we wouldn't have with a baby on the way. Finishing my degree is something I've tried to do a couple of times in the past and now, I'm praying, it's going to become a reality, slowly but surely. Brandon too, is on his way to getting a college degree. God has given us a mission and we want to be faithful enough to see it through to completion. My heart sill aches with the desire to have a baby, but again, I have to be faithful and know that the Lord will answer my prayer in His own time.

Esther 4:14b KJV
And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

We have been put here on this earth, in these specific circumstances, for a time such as this. We all know in our heart what our calling is, how we can serve our Lord and Savior in the best way possible. Our faithfulness is our promise to heed to our calling and to do our best as servants seeking the Master's approval.

Fruits of the Spirit: Peace

Peace Is:
A settled confidence of mind (Philippians 4:7) from a right relationship with God (Philippians 4:9) unaffected by circumstantial change (Philippians 4:11).

To avoid spoiling watch for worry.

The angel in the picture above is Lachlan's angel. It is placed by his tiny grave. The flowers I take on the anniversaries of his delivery date and his due date. I have never shared a picture of his grave with anyone before. It is a place that only my family has been. When I sat down last night to begin this post I was going to go in another direction entirely. I was going to talk about the peace that God gives us from our worry and anxiety in our everyday lives. But I felt the Holy Ghost whisper his name and I knew what I had to do.

These are a series of letters between my Papaw and me, that I have never shared with anyone, not even Brandon. I had not read them in years until tonight. It never ceases to amaze me when the Holy Ghost moves in my heart.

January 29, 2010

How are you? Great to hear from you. I was wondering if we were still on speaking terms. Now that I see you are still there and still numbered among the living, it just tickles me to death. Granny said "Hi" and she still loves you. Me on the other hand, well it is kinda like charity. Charity never faileth. Well just read 1 Corinthians13 KJV, that will tell you more then I can because you know I am limited...Gpop

January 29, 2010

My pulse is slowly returning, I wouldn't call it living just yet.  I have missed you and Granny.  I love you both so much.  It's funny that you mention 1 Corinthians 13. Did you know that it is my favorite passage in the Bible?  I had it read at my wedding and at the baby's service.  That tells me more than an "I love you" ever could.  I miss him so much Papaw and I don't know what to do about it.  I am so angry at God.  I do not hate Him but I don't understand why this has happened to me.  I wanted my baby more than anything and I feel so terribly empty without him.  I have considered terrible, terrible things but I can't bring myself to leave the rest of my family behind.  When will it stop hurting? Will I ever find peace?  I have so many questions and no answers.  I just want to be happy and whole again.  I love you.  Give Granny a kiss for me...Kenni

 January 30, 2010

Honey you left me with a tough one.You came to the second best. God should be your first choice. I can't speak for Him. He does a lot of things that we as mortal humans can not explain or understand but we should except His wisdom and expertise. He is the greatest. He can see so far into the future and we can't. So we need to except what He does because He knows everything. You should not be angry at Him. He may have greater plans then what we could know. You know, we don't have the power to change the past.  You can't give up. The next best thing is start living again, not just existing. When you start living again the hurt will start to go away. Thank Him for what you have. Enjoy what you have. To find peace you need to look to the only One that has peace. John 14:27 (KJV) and for the other questions Mark 13:23 (KJV). You know, time is the greatest teacher of all. The only problem, it eventually kills all the students. Enjoy life all the time, every day, because it has an expiration date...Gpop

February 15, 2010

Papaw, I am sorry that I have taken so long to write back.  I don't like to talk about everything in front of Brandon because it upsets him and I know he is trying to stay strong for me, so the less he thinks about everything the better off he says he is.  I'm not sure if that is the best thing but I think about it all the time and that doesn't seem to be doing me any better.  I read the passages you told me to.  I even went a little further and read chapters 14 through 17 in John.  I should have read them a long time ago.  I know the He is my Comforter and that I should turn to Him because He is the peace that my heart is missing.  I know that my baby is with the Father and that truly that is where he is the happiest. But I am selfish and I want him here with me.  I do at least have the comfort that I will see him again one day.  I picture it and it is perfect. He'll be in the arms of Jesus and when I get to heaven he will run to my arms and I will finally be able to hold him again and this time he'll be able to hold me back.  I know that there is a reason for everything that happens and I may never know what it is. But if I did, it may be easier to deal with.  The doctors ran some tests and they said that I had a virus that is called CMV and that even though it's rare, if the baby got it, it could have been fatal.  And had it not been fatal and he had it, there was a 90% chance he would have been born deaf and blind and mentally challenged.  I would have loved him anyway!!!  I know that that is no life for a child to live.  He wouldn't have been happy. At least now he'll be able to run and play and see how beautiful heaven is and hear the angels.  I am trying to get better.  It is day to day for me.  Some are better than others and sometimes even the tiniest reminder can set me off and I'm crying for hours.  I guess that is to be expected and everyone says it will get easier.  But I don't want to forget him.  And sometimes I feel like if I don't hang on to every little thing, that I'll forget something and soon he will fade away.  I don't want that to happen.  All I have left are my memories and the few hours that I had with him.  I am sorry to bombard you with all of this but I feel like you understand and I love you so much for that!  Thank you for just being there to listen and to remind me that He is there is to listen too.
Please give Granny a kiss for me and tell her I love her!  I love you!...
Kenni

Memories are past history. Some of them I would like to forget. I was young and dumb.
Made a lot of mistakes. But it only takes a minute to recall most all of them even though we
try hard to forget. We learn by trials, troubles and mistakes. I have been around a long time b
eing a recovering idiot. I made life hard on myself. I learn't to leave past history behind
and try to create better, future history. That means live clean, love hard, challenge life and
enjoy all of it you can. And having regrets or depression stifles all the real joy out of
life. It is a one day at a time thing.
Even with a small brain and a little work people can
achieve the greatest of things. It's not hard. I even enjoy what I call life, though most people
would call it a waste of time. They just don't get it. Life is not all it is cracked up to be. Y
ou are an individual. You have the opportunity to make your own way. And the way you do
that is with truth and honesty, forgiving yourself first and thinking of others...Gpop

My Papaw is a wise man. And he was right. Time did lessen the pain and living life eased the hurt. But I was still seeking the one thing I needed most...Peace. And Papaw was right about that too. I had to turn to the only One who had it...Jesus. My peace didn't come for more than 3 years after these letters were written. My peace didn't come until I had righted my relationship with God. I had to let go of the anger, the hurt, the bitterness, and the doubt and second guessing His will. It was not easy to do. But when I found myself in a heap in the alter one Sunday, crying out for forgiveness for the years I'd spent away from Him in rebellion and anger, when I finally asked and was forgiven, the peace came soon after.
